Mr. Baze accepted his first mount at Yakima Meadows (Yakima, WA) back in October of 1974. Baze has now ridden a Thoroughbred in 40 consecutive years.

Baze was born on Aug. 7, 1958, in Vancouver, B.C., and has been leegged up at least 1,000 times an astonishing 33 straight years (1980-2012).

His most mounts in one year totaled 1,694 back in 1988. That total averages out to 32½ rides every week for all 52 weeks of the year.

“Russell the Muscle” won the California Derby earlier this year for a record sixth time. Baze broke a 5-5 tie with John Longden. The California Derby dates back to the 1870s.

Baze was inducted into the Thoroughbred racing’s Hall of Fame in 1999.
