The Sonics were 22-3 entering New Year’s Day in 1994

The Oklahoma City Thunder disposed of the Phoenix Suns on Monday night (Dec. 31, 2012) to improve their record to a gaudy 24-6 (.800).

Here are the best records by the Seattle SuperSonics entering the New Year.

1993-94 – 22-3 (.880). Seattle, coached by George Karl, started the season 10-0 and sported a 16-1 record after a home thrashing of the Dallas Mavericks (125-93). The Sonics lost just once at home – an 87-86 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Dec. 23, 1993. Seattle finished 63-19 and lost three straight games to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of the playoffs, losing the series 3 games to 2. The Sonics were led by Shawn Kemp (18.1 ppg, 10.8 rpg), Gary Payton (16.5 ppg, 6 apg) and Detlef Schrempf (15.0 ppg) during the regular season.

1997-98 – 24-6 (.800). Seattle had win streaks of seven and six games during their solid start. The Sonics finished 61-21 and won their first round playoff matchup over Minnesota 3 games to 2 – having to win the final two games of the series. They got knocked out by the L. A. Lakers 4-1 after winning the first game 106-92. Vin Baker (19.2 ppg, 8.0 rpg), Gary Payton (19.2 ppg, 8.3 apg), and Detlef Schrempf (15.8, ppg, 7.1 rpg, 5.4 apg) were the big three.

2004-05 – 22-6 (.786). The Supes reeled off a nine-game winning streak after losing 114-84 at the L. A. Clippers in the opening game of the season. The Sonics took out Sacramento in the first round of the playoffs – 3 games to 2 after finishing the season 52-30. San Antonio eliminated Seattle 4 games to 2 in the second round with the Spurs winning Game 6 in Seattle 98-96. Ray Allen (23.9 ppg) and Rashard Lewis (20.5 ppg) led the way.

1982-83 – 23-8 (.742). Seattle won their first 12 games of the season with seven coming on the road. The lost their next two games by 38 points while playing at home.  Gus Williams (20.0 ppg, 8.0 apg), Jack Sikma (18.2 ppg, 11.4 rpg) and David Thompson (15.9 ppg) were the go-to players. Seattle ended the season 48-34 and lost in the first round to Portland 2 games to 0.
