Gary Stevens smiles FIVE times on Santa Anita Opening Day 1992

Twenty years ago – Dec. 26, 1992 – Gary Stevens won five races from eight mounts at the Great Race Place – Santa Anita Park, Arcadia, Calif.



Race 2 Express It (8/5) won by a ½ length for trainer Donn Luby.

Race 3 As Que To (FR) (5/1) won a turf event by a nose. Trained by Richard Mandella.

Race 4 Likeable Style (7/1) finished a length ahead for trainer Richard Mandella.

Race 6 Real Hit (7/2) found the wire a a length in front for trainer Bob Baffert.

Race 8 (MALIBU STAKES) Star of the Crop (3/1) defeated The Wicked North by a ½ length and a neck back in third was the 7/5 favorite Bertrando. The winner was trained by Willard Proctor.

Stevens was 0-7 on opening day 1991 and was blanked again in 1993 going 0-9 on Dec. 26, with a close second on Concept Win in the Malibu (Diazo was the winner with Laffit Pincay, Jr. aboard).

Stevens would be the leading jockey at the ’92-’93 Santa Anita meet with 90 victories (18 more than Eddie Delahoussaye). It was Stevens’ last of four riding titles at the Santa Anita meet.

Stevens stopped riding in 2005 and totaled 4,888 wins with his first win happening in 1979.
