Northwest Breeders’ Cup historical moments

The 2012 Breeders’ Cup will take place at Santa Anita on Friday and Saturday. This will be the 29th running.

Class Included competes in the Friday Ladies’ Classic for trainer Jim Penney. The 4-year-old filly is owned by Mike and Amy Feuerborn.

Trainer Frank Lucarelli starts Stormy Lucy for owner Frank Gaunt.

Longtime breeder Northwest Farms will have Super Ninety Nine in the Juvenile Sprint.

Commander, who raced at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, B.C., starts in the Marathon for main owner Glen Todd. He’ll be ridden by Mario Gutierrez.

Some top moments by NW connections:

GARY STEVENS (jockey): Won eight races from 1990-2000. Stevens finished with a Breedesrs’ Cup record: 99/8-15-11.

MIKE PEGRAM (owner): Won 1998 Juvenile Fillies with Silverbulletday and his $6 million earner Captain Steve finished third in the 2000 Classic. Also a part-owner of Sprint winners Thirty Slews (1992) Midnight Lute (2007-08), and the 2009 Juvenile second-place finisher Lookin At Lucky.

HERMAN SARKOWSKY (owner): His 2-year-old, Phone Chatter, won the 1993 Juvenile Fillies.

MARK DEDOMENICO (owner): Blind Luck finished second in the 2010 Ladies’ Classic and 3rd in the 2009 Juvenile Fillies.

GEORGE TODARO (owner): Part of a partnership that owned Dakota Phone that won the 2010 Dirt Mile at 37-1. Campaigned Hystericalady with trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, she missed by a neck in the 2007 Ladies’ Classic at 9-1.

BUDROYALE (horse): Nearly pulled of a huge upset in the 1999 Classic – losing by 1 1/4 lengths to 19-1 Cat Thief. Budroyale had won the LGA Mile that summer for owner Jeffrey Sengara who also finished second with Bluesthestandard in the 2003 Sprint.

SMARTY DEB (horse): Undefeated Emerald Downs star trained by Doris Harwood, owned by Northwest Farms and ridden by Ricky Frazier finished fifth in the 2007 Juvenile Fillies over a sloppy Monmouth Racetrack.

SKYWALKER (horse): After winning the 1986 Longacres Mile won the $3 million Classic (Laffit Pincay, Jr. riding)  at 10-1 for owners Oak Cliff Stable.

GARY BAZE (jockey): Put 25-1 Unfinished Sympf (trained by Wesley Ward) on the lead in the 1994 Mile, held for third, just missing second.

DAVE and JILL HEERESPERGER (owners): Hawksley Hill (15-1) finished a head back in second in the 1998 Mile.

MIKE CHAMBERS (trainer): Hesabull, second in the 1997 Longacres Mile, rallied for second in the Sprint three months later at 15-1 for owners Three Sisters Stable (Ron Judy).

SIMPLY MAJESTIC (horse): Two-time Longacres Mile winner finished third in the 1988 Mile and fifth in 1989 Mile.

AWESOME GEM (horse): The 2011 Longacres Mile winner finished 3rd in the 2007 Classic. That was his best finish in four Breeders’ Cup assignments.

GALLANT SON (horse): Local 2-year-old owned by Chris and Dianna Randall finished 7th in the 2008 Juvenile for top EmD trainer Frank Lucarelli.

RON CROCKETT (owner): Turf star Vaudeville was seventh in the 1994 Turf after winning the Grade I Secretariat earlier in the year.

JACK HODGE (owner): Willcox Inn checked in 3rd in the 2010 Juvenile Turf for the part owner.

ATTA BOY ROY (horse): The WA-bred finished a disappointing 10th at 6-1 in the 2010 Sprint.

JAWL BROS (owners): Bedside Promise finished a game third in the 1986 Sprint. Bedside Promise had won the Governor’s H. and placed second in the Lga Mile earlier that year.

FIRESWEEPER (horse): First WA-bred to run in the Breeders’ Cup in 1985 for owner Northwest Farms.
