Delta Colleen won the Ballerina for a THIRD time – 20 years ago

Do you realize its been 20 years since the great mare DELTA COLLEEN had her picture taken after winning a stakes race at Exhibition Park, now Hastings Racecourse.

The race she won was the BALLERINA, which is being contested today at the Vancouver, B.C. oval.

Today’s matchup is between the local 3-year-old star EVELYN’S DANCER (four consecutive wins) and CLASS INCLUDED (nine wins and six seconds from 15 career starts).

DELTA COLLEEN won the Ballerina three times, only matched by Magic Code (1998-2000).

Delta Colleen’s record in the Ballerina (inaugurated in 1975):

Oct. 9, 1988 – She toyed with her rivals winning by 4½ lengths as the 3-5 favorite.

Oct. 8, 1989 – She entered the race, a loser of five straight races, but hit the wire that day a nose ahead of Valerie’s Delight.

Oct. 8, 1990 – The B.C. bred checked in fourth as the even-money favorite.

Oct. 14, 1991 –She ended up a well-beaten second as she was 18 lengths back midway through the race. Avant’s Gold won the race by 7 lengths making it two straight wins in the Ballerina.

Oct. 18, 1992 – In her final race of her career at Exhibition Park, the now 7-year-old grinds pass the 6-5 favorite Cadette Stevens to win by a Neck!

Jockey Chris Loseth was aboard in each of her Ballerina starts. Loseth won 15 stakes races at Exhibition Park aboard her. Sam Krasner and Brian Johnson (2) are the other jockeys to wins stakes at EP.

Delta Colleen, by Golden Reserve, out of Great Poise, was bred by Cline Hoggard in B.C.

She was owned by John Franks and trained by Dave Bell, Frank Barroby, Harold Barroby, Len Kasmerski and Victor Gibson.
