The final heat was all about attrition. Only two boats finished running.

The Atlas Van Lines, driven by Chip Hanauer, easily defeated theU-5  Coberly Chevrolet Special (Terry Turner driver) an auto-engine powered boat known previously as the Candyman averaged 104. “Nobody else could keep things together all day long,” Hanauer said to the media. “We had problems, too. Our guys were just scrambling … They put together a Heinz 57 motor – a part out of this one, a part out of tht one.”

The boats that did not finish:

U-96.5 Miss KYYX returned to the pits after one lap.

U-2 The Squire Shop went dead in the water in the first turn of the first lap.

U-80 failed to start.

U-8 Executone failed to start.

The U-1 Miss Budweiser was plagued by oil-pressure problems all day and didn’t qualify for the final heat.

The victory was Hanauer’s fourth of the season in his first year with the Atlas Van Lines team. He won his first of many Driver’s Championships in 1982.
