FLYING NOTES BLITZED HIS FOES 10 YEARS AGO TODAY!

Flying Notes charged to the lead and never let up running a stunning race in the Emerald Downs Breeders’ Cup Derby on Sept. 2, 2002.

The Bud Klokstad-trained runner led by 1 1/2 lengths after cruising through 6 furlongs in 1:08 2/5. Jockey Kevin Radke still had 3 furlongs to negotiate, and Flying Notes kept on rolling.

The tandem opened up a 6-length lead with a furlong to go, cutting the first mile in 1:32 3/5!

Flying Notes hit the wire 11 1/4 lengths ahead of his competition. His final time of 1:45 2/5 for 1 1/8th-mile race stands as the fastest in state history.
