Emerald Downs Derby today!

The championship race for 3-year-olds will be contested for the 75th time today at Emerald Downs.

The big 3 – Italian Boy, D’honorable One and Makors Finale will do battle one more time at the 1 1/8th-mile distance.

All three have won at least one stakes race at the meet – The winner today will likely be named Top 3-year-old!

Trainer Tim McCanna (Italian Boy) has a chance to tie for the most Derby wins in history.

Speaking of the 75th running – the first Derby was run on Aug. 12, 1934!

The winner was Campillo who finished the 1 1/8th-mile distance in 1:54, paying $7.80 to win. A crowd of over 15,000 watched the contest that had a purse of $1,250-added. Campillo was owned and trained by William Finnegan.

Lets look back at some memorable Derbys run in Washington:

1982 – A dead-heat between the local hero Flying Judgement and the hotdog shipper Cassaleria

1973 – Table Run Wins Derby by 9 lengths
