Longacres Mile – Let the countdown begin

The richest and most prestigious race in the Pacific Northwest is just 10 days away – Sunday, August 19.

The 77th Longacres Mile will be contested at Emerald Downs for the 17th time. Three times is was held at Yakima Meadows after the closure of Longacres in 1992.

The MILE, which was founded by Longacres founder Joe Gottstein in 1935, was run 57 times at the Renton oval.

Check back each day, as we’ll look back at one of the Greatest “Magical Miles.”

THE FIRST ONE – AUG. 24 1935 – Longshot COLDWATER edges favorite BIFF and JOEY

Coldwater a 19-1 outsider, carrying 110 pounds and jockey Willie Robertson, closed the gap on Biff (carrying 126 pounds) and in a stirring stretch drive to prevail by a neck.

    How does 122 lbs on class included compare with recent and historical high weights?
