Seafair 2012 is upon US

3 Aug

Blue skies, planes zipping over Lake Washington, locals strolling up-and-down Lake Washington Blvd, fences back up, I-90 closed, cranes pitching into the air around Stan Sayres Pits, it must be time to see the fastest boats in the World speed around the Ted Jones Racecourse.

The two top boats (Spirit of Qatar 96 and the Oh Boy! Oberto) are back again after qualifying 1-2 on Friday.

The Ellstrom family who owns the Qatar boat first raced in Seattle in 1994. Their boat took-off into the sky prior to a heat race and smashed into the lake. They returned the next year with a new boat and have been a staple at the Seafair weekend ever since. The U-16 Miss E-Lam Plus didn’t gain a podium finish until 2000 (3rd place).

The Oberto Jerky Company first sponsored a boat at Seafair in 1975 and didn’t finish in the top three until 1987. They fizzled out the next few years and didn’t sponsor a boat from 1994-1999.

So the year 2000 is a good starting point to compare the two giants of the sport!
