Today marks the 40-year anniversary of

LARRY PIERCE

rides 7 winners at Longacres

 MAY 20, 1972

 Jockey Larry Pierce, age 26, won with seven of his eight mounts to become just the seventh rider at the time to accomplish the one-day riding feat.

 

Here’s a look at his record run to the winner’s circle:

Race 1 – Gate to wire score on Lacey Creek ($8.90).

Race 4 – Took the lead riding Persian Fleeting in the stretch ($6.60).

Race 5 – Up in time to win by a head on Royal Coachman ($6.90).

Race 6 – Held on for a neck victory on Miss Cindy Shelly ($5.70).

Race 8 – Pressed the pace to score with Do Re Jo ($21.60).

Race 9 – Rallied Sevant ($4.80) from 10th and last to win at  5½f.

Race 10 – Roared down the stretch aboard Vital Penny ($9.30).

Pierce won three riding titles at Longacres (1970, 1971 and 1976) and finished third all-time with 1,039 wins. His 63 added-money triumphs were second most at the Renton oval.

 

He won the 6½-furlong Governor’s Handicap three times.

1966 – Sandy Fleet (New world record 1:14-2)

1970 – Turbulator (New world record 1:14)

1973 – Silver Mallet (Won Longacres Mile in his next start)
